One of the main goals we have at Discovery Sea Kayaks is to be a steward for the wildlife of the San Juan Islands and the islands themselves. Our staff continually work on increasing their knowledge to keep up with all the new research in the region. Sharing up to date information is key introducing our guest to the region to highlighting the importance on conservation and recovery of many of our local species. All Discovery guides are certified through The Whale Museum in the Kayak Education Leadership Program (KELP). The annual certification is a process to update guides on any new changes in laws and regulations pertaining to wildlife encounters. The program also offers any new information on the status of wildlife populations in the area. We see ourselves at the first contact many had with the wildlife in the San Juan’s and take it as our responsibility to provide an educational experience that can help visitors better understand the uniqueness of the area and the pressures faced to keep it unique.
We are proud members of the San Juan Island Kayak Association. The SJIKA is a small group of kayak business based on San Juan Island that came together to aid in the best practice guidelines for kayaking with wildlife. The guidelines cover all state and federal laws and go into more details to cover other wildlife in the region.
The Whale Museum located in downtown Friday Harbor promotes stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. We are business level sponsors of The Whale Museum to help further their good work of promoting conservation in the San Juan Islands.
